The best thing about my job
The best thing about my job is definitely working with and meeting new people. I get a lot of satisfaction from working in teams and there are some very talented people working in MSD

If you have an interest and or love of science topics then I would say to pursue it and work hard

From a young age I was always fascinated with science so I suppose you could say my curiosity and love for the subject was the main factor

My main tasks

Generally my role involves giving advice and direction regarding Process Safety Management. MSD is constantly innovating so I also spend a significant portion of my time developing new ideas and solutions to our current systems

Challenges

There are tricky elements to every job, but for me, it’s probably trying to get the balance right between being creative and thinking outside the box to overcome technical challenges while observing proper compliance

Who influenced me

From a young age I was always fascinated with science so I suppose you could say my curiosity and love for the subject was the main factor

Work/life balance

Yes absolutely, I’m heavily involved in my local GAA club both in coaching and administration and I also have a young family so I’ve plenty to keep me busy outside of work!

Most useful aspects of my eduction

All of it is very useful as skills and knowledge can be transferrable and sometimes overlap. For instance, my primary degree is in Biology and I worked in a Chemistry environment for 12-13 years. Now my role includes working on biopharmaceutical projects and my understanding of biology principles really helps

Useful work experience

Any work experience is useful as it demonstrates that you’re enthusiastic. That said, getting some experience in the sector is always more helpful e.g. labs, assistants
